Why “The Elderly Lions”? With the creation of “The Old Lions Foundation”, it became legally impossible to continue to continue to call ourselves “The Old Lions”. It has been suggested that we should have called ourselves “The Senior Lions”. One of the most common euphemisms for older people, but “senior” implies that people who receive the label are different, and somehow lesser than those who don’t. The World Health Organisation states “there is no general agreement on the age at which a person becomes old. Whatever you consider old, is old. As far back as 1875, in Britain, the Friendly Societies Act, enacted the definition of old age as, “any age after 50”, yet pension schemes mostly used age 60 or 65 years for eligibility. The UN has not adopted a standard criterion, but generally use 60+ years to refer to the older population. Technically, the “elderly” as defined by society begins at 65 years. Social Security consider “elderly” is 65+. The Merriam Webster dictionary gives an even broader definition for “elderly” as “being past middle age.” Generally speaking it sounds more eloquent to use ‘elderly’. ...and so, in 2020, The Elderly Lions—came into being -- a group of un-registered, un-incorporated but dedicated and hard-working volunteers representing former students and teachers—came into being, replacing The Old Lions Incorporated. We obviously have a limited timeline: let’s make it enjoyable with the best of camaraderie. STREAMS The Old Lions originated the “Stream” system. Some boys didn’t start until 2nd Year; others left school in 3rd Year to start apprenticeships or a junior job. Others chose to or left for family reasons before completing 5th Year. Each year there were major intakes from relatively nearby “Intermediate High” schools into 4th Year. Regardless of when you started or when you left, your “Stream” is that period where you spent most years with schoolmates. Each Stream has a “Stream Leader”...probably one of your classmates. Make sure you know your Stream Leader! COMMUNICATIONS We don’t have – and don’t intend to have – a committee! What we are building is core group of volunteers who each accept responsibility for a small but specific task and communicate quickly and efficiently with each other What can you do to help out? Contact schoolmates! Communicate with your Stream Leader! Volunteer to do one small task each year. NEWSLETTER Greenwood’s Grapevine went down with The Old Lions! In its place, an 8 page, full colour, electronic newsletter Carpe Diem is published around Jan/Feb and the second issue around Aug/Sep. Make sure we have your up-to-date email address!!! If you have not been receiving our newsletter or you know of a schoolmate who would like to receive the newsletter, send a request providing full name, Stream, postal address, land-line and/or mobile phone, together with a valid email address to leo@elderlylions.org. Send news of yourself and/or friends, old photos, potted history of your career, your life, your class-mates at school, what you’re doing or plan to do in retirement, funny ha-ha’s ...your memories to simba@elderlylions.org FACEBOOK click to link https://www.facebook.com/groups/greenys REUNIONS AND EVENTS Former students have gathered together from time to time since WWI and as a formal annual event every year since 1971.
